I don't have anything to add other than that this pushes all my rage buttons, too. The moms=parents thing drives me nuts because it constantly reinforces the idea that men are not parents, they're just babysitters when they spend time with their kids. Ugh.

Juventus had a <a href="https://www.google.ca/search?q=juventus+pink+kits&client=firefox-a&hs=L3H&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=WECMUY6_CNHFqQHz6YHACA&ved=0CDEQsAQ&biw=1600&bih=691" rel="nofollow">pink kit</a> a couple of seasons ago, too! Maybe this sort of thing is more acceptable in soccer. I've seen pink Toronto FC kits as well, although funnily enough it's usually men who are wearing them at games, not women.

With all my knowledge of Burke coming from that article, it sounds like his situation was what you're describing, and even if it wasn't, it's hard to be "out" the way most people think of being "out" if the press refuses to even talk about it.
Good catch, thanks.

About Burke, in my research it seemed that the consensus was he came out after he retired. But this raises the issue of what it means to be out, especially as someone in the spotlight. If you go about your life not hiding your sexual orientation and the people you interact with all know, aren't you out? Or do you need to shout it from the rooftops? Makes me think of the actor Victor Garber, who recently was reported to be gay but he was basically like "I've never hidden anything, it's just that no one ever asked me."

No.

1. “Collins is the first professional athlete to come out during his career.” This is simply false. <--- Your face is false. His career. HIS career. This is true.
2. The major sports leagues are: NFL, NBA, MLB and arguably NASCAR. This is in terms of revenue, spend, effect on local economies and attendance. Anyone doing anything outside of those 3/4 leagues will be marginalized. Sorry Rafa. Sorry Serena.
3. Maybe female atheletes "coming out" aren't a big deal anymore because so many have come out that it's no longer news. Isn't the goal to be that coming out isn't a big deal? Guaranteed the next handful of male pro atheletes to "come out" will be celebrated yes.
4. Jason Collins is "celebrated" because he is "threatening" and "benefits from the patriarchy"?

<i>he is the first male professional athlete to come out during his career. </i>

As the covering of this story continues to morph, apparently this isn't even the case anymore either. The Atlantic had <a href="http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2013/05/actually-jason-collins-isnt-the-first-openly-gay-man-in-a-major-pro-sport/275523/" rel="nofollow">an article</a> about Glenn Burke, who was apparently very out as a player for the LA Dodgers and Oakland A's in the mid 1970s.

The first I heard of Collins coming was in an article that went to great pains to say that he was the first out male athlete in one of the big-four American sports, as if by being that specific they could hold off any criticism of erasing other people's accomplishments. Most of the subsequent articles I read, though, were of the very vague "First out athlete, ever!!" variety which is just not the case.
